3D scanning is the process of analysing a real-world object or environment to collect data on its shape and appearance, from which digital 3D models are built.

3D scanning is the process of analysing a real-world object or environment to collect data on its shape and possibly its appearance (e.g. colour). The collected data is then used to construct digital 3D models.
What it is used for
- Reverse engineering - you start from an existing part and obtain its CAD model
- Dimensional inspection - comparing the manufactured part against the design model
- Digitisation of cultural heritage - craft objects, ceramics, traditional instruments, within the Root4Dig project
- Virtual reality - scanned models become content for the VR applications developed by students
The link with the cultural projects
The scanner is the central piece of equipment in Root4Dig: heritage objects from the shared Carpathians are scanned, processed and integrated into the electronic album and the virtual reality programmes, so that they remain accessible even when the physical object can no longer be exhibited.
